The ISKCON Chicago Temple marked a significant spiritual milestone as devotees gathered to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the installation of Sri Sri Kishore Kishori (Radha Krishna deities). The event, held on June 17, 2026, at the temple located on West Lunt Avenue in Chicago, brought together longtime followers, newer devotees, and members of the wider community for an evening filled with devotion, remembrance, and shared spiritual history.
The celebration, held from evening hours, reflected on more than five decades of faith, service, and transformation within the temple community. Devotees shared memories of how the sacred deities were originally installed in Mumbai before being brought to Chicago, where they have been worshipped continuously since their arrival. One priest noted the remarkable timing of the deities reaching Chicago even before the visit of Srila Prabhupada in the mid-1970s.
Speakers revisited the early days of the ISKCON movement in Chicago, describing humble beginnings in a small apartment space on Halsted Street. Devotees recalled enduring harsh winters, limited facilities, and challenging living conditions while maintaining their spiritual practices. Over time, the community relocated to a former YMCA building in Evanston before finally establishing its permanent temple home in the city in 1980, a move seen as both challenging and miraculous due to financial and logistical hurdles.
Senior devotees recounted the temple’s gradual expansion, including early festivals, street processions, and the evolution of the altar from simple clay idols to intricately designed marble deities. They also highlighted the growth of the Rath Yatra celebrations and the steady development of temple infrastructure, which transformed over the years from basic wooden structures into a fully developed spiritual center.
Many speakers reflected on the sense of divine presence they experienced throughout the temple’s history. Devotees shared personal stories of answered prayers, long-term service commitments, and the strong sense of community that developed around the temple. Readings from sacred texts emphasized that even simple acts of devotion are considered deeply meaningful within the tradition.
The event also paid tribute to individuals who contributed to the temple’s growth, including leaders, volunteers, book distributors, kitchen staff, and donors who supported the temple financially during critical periods. Special recognition was given to members of the Indian community who provided essential support during the temple’s early development stages.
The evening concluded with a group photograph of attendees, symbolizing the unity and continuity of the ISKCON Chicago community. The celebration stood as a reflection of enduring faith and the shared spiritual journey that continues to define the temple’s legacy after 53 years of devotion and service.
