India and Austria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation following high-level discussions held in Vienna. Indian Ambassador to Austria Shambhu S. Kumaran met Austrian Ministry of Defence Secretary General Dr. Arnold Kammel to review progress and identify new avenues for collaboration in strategic and security matters.
The discussions focused on implementing the Letter of Intent on Cooperation in Military Matters, signed during the Austrian Chancellor’s visit to India in April 2026. The agreement provides an institutional framework to enhance military cooperation, defence industrial collaboration, technology partnerships, policy dialogue, training, and capacity building between the two nations.
Both sides also reviewed efforts to expand cooperation in counter-terrorism. A separate Letter of Intent signed during the Austrian Chancellor’s visit aims to establish a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, enabling India and Austria to work closely on combating terrorism, sharing expertise, and exploring strategic areas of cooperation.
The defence partnership builds on the broader momentum created by the India-European Union Defence and Security Partnership, reinforcing cooperation in regional and global security matters.
In a separate engagement, Ambassador Kumaran met members of the India Friendship Group in the Austrian Parliament. Discussions highlighted the growing momentum in India-Austria relations and explored opportunities to deepen cooperation across trade, sustainability, innovation, mobility, supply chain resilience, defence, space, and emerging technologies.
The meetings reflected the expanding strategic partnership between India and Austria, with both countries seeking to strengthen collaboration across defence, security, technology, and economic sectors while enhancing institutional engagement for long-term bilateral cooperation.
