Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with members of the Indian diaspora during his visit to Seychelles on Monday, engaging warmly with community members who had gathered to meet him. The diaspora expressed strong enthusiasm as they welcomed the Prime Minister, sharing moments of interaction and photographs during the visit.
Following the meet-and-greet, PM Modi was scheduled to visit the Navashakti Vinayakar Temple in Victoria. Ahead of his arrival, members of the Indian community described extensive preparations made to receive him, noting that the timing of his visit coincided with Seychelles’ 50th National Day celebrations, making the occasion especially significant for the diaspora.
Community members highlighted their excitement and pride in hosting the Prime Minister. One member said the community was pleased that PM Modi was visiting during the national celebrations and mentioned that prayers would be offered for his long life and continued leadership. Cultural programs were also organized to honor his visit and showcase Indian traditions within Seychelles.
Another member of the diaspora, Shashi, emphasized the emotional significance of the visit, noting the strong bilateral relationship between India and Seychelles. He expressed hope that the engagement would further deepen diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.
Dhanlakshmi, another diaspora member, described the visit as an honor and noted her involvement in initiatives connected with local government cooperation. She also expressed optimism that India would continue supporting infrastructure development at the Hindu temple, reflecting the strong cultural connection shared by the Indian-origin community in Seychelles.
PM Modi had earlier participated in Seychelles’ National Day celebrations as Guest of Honour. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence and featured large-scale ceremonies, including a dramatic parachute display by Seychelles security forces carrying national flags, which drew enthusiastic public celebrations.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit reflects the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties between India and Seychelles. As a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean region, Seychelles plays an important role in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR, which focuses on mutual security and growth across regions, as well as broader engagement with the Global South.
During the visit, PM Modi was also conferred the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award, recognizing his leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. He addressed the Seychelles National Assembly and held bilateral discussions with President Patrick Herminie, further strengthening cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors.
