The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO-CT) celebrated two decades of community leadership with a special anniversary gala in Darien, Connecticut. The event brought together elected officials, diplomats, business executives, academics, and community leaders to recognize outstanding contributions made by Indian Americans across multiple fields.
India’s Deputy Consul General in New York, Vishal Harsh, attended the ceremony as the chief guest and praised the achievements of Indian Americans, describing the community as a global example of excellence and innovation. He emphasized that members of the Indian diaspora have established strong reputations in areas ranging from technology and business to public service and leadership. Harsh also highlighted the Indian government’s commitment to providing round-the-clock support and consular services to overseas Indians.
GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani reflected on the organization’s journey over the last twenty years, noting that its success has been built on volunteer efforts, community engagement, and a commitment to preserving cultural heritage while encouraging civic participation and youth development. Founder and GOPIO International leader Dr. Thomas Abraham echoed those sentiments, stating that the Connecticut chapter has become a model for similar organizations worldwide.
The celebration honored several accomplished Indian American personalities, including Connecticut State Senator Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox for political leadership, NanoViricides founder Dr. Anil Diwan for entrepreneurship, First County Bank Chief Executive Officer Nitin Mhatre for corporate leadership, University of Hartford professor Hemchandra Shertukde for achievements in engineering, and veteran journalist Ajay Ghosh for his contributions to media and public communication.
During the gathering, Senator Gadkar-Wilcox highlighted the role immigrants play in shaping American society and emphasized that cultural traditions brought by immigrant communities enrich the broader national identity. Journalist Ajay Ghosh, meanwhile, used the occasion to stress the importance of responsible journalism and warned about challenges confronting media institutions globally.
The anniversary celebration also paid tribute to founding members and former presidents who helped establish and strengthen the organization over the years. In a demonstration of its commitment to community welfare, GOPIO-CT donated $0.05 million each to Future 5 and the Children’s Learning Center of Fairfield County, reinforcing its dedication to education, youth initiatives, and charitable outreach.
The milestone event underscored the expanding influence of Indian Americans and their growing contributions to civic life, economic development, and community leadership across the United States.
