The United States and India are working to deepen their civil nuclear partnership, with both countries increasingly emphasizing the role of private industry in supporting future energy needs. The initiative comes as India experiences growing electricity demand driven by economic expansion, technological development, and industrial growth.
Speaking at the Vision India 2047 CITI 2026 event in Mumbai, US Ambassador Sergio Gor highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration in the civil nuclear sector. He described nuclear energy as one of the most promising areas for long-term cooperation between the two nations and said efforts are underway to elevate the partnership to a new level.
According to Gor, recent engagements between American nuclear industry representatives and Indian stakeholders have focused on demonstrating how private-sector innovation can contribute to the development of safe, reliable, and secure nuclear power generation. He noted that companies affiliated with the US Nuclear Energy Institute recently visited India to explore opportunities and share expertise related to modern nuclear technologies.
The ambassador stressed that private businesses will play a crucial role in helping India expand its nuclear energy capacity over the coming decades. He explained that long-term projects of this scale will require not only technological collaboration but also strong support from financial institutions and investors. Such cooperation, he said, offers significant economic and strategic benefits for both countries.
The growing nuclear partnership is also connected to broader efforts by Washington and New Delhi to strengthen cooperation in advanced technologies. Gor referenced the TRUST Initiative, launched in 2025, which promotes collaboration in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, and critical minerals. He suggested that nuclear energy development aligns closely with the shared objective of building secure and resilient supply chains for future technologies.
Another key component of the partnership involves reducing dependence on concentrated supply sources and enhancing economic resilience. Recent agreements related to critical minerals and strategic resources are expected to complement efforts in the energy sector and support long-term technological competitiveness.
Gor also pointed to ongoing high-level engagement between the two governments as evidence of a strong and expanding relationship. He emphasized that India and the United States are uniquely positioned to work together on many of the defining economic and technological challenges of the coming decades.
With India’s electricity requirements projected to increase substantially in the years ahead, both nations are looking toward a future marked by sustained cooperation in civil nuclear energy. The vision includes active participation from private companies, investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers working together to create a secure and sustainable energy ecosystem that supports economic growth and innovation.
