Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement will create major opportunities across trade, technology, manufacturing, and strategic supply chains, while further strengthening India’s position as a reliable economic partner for Europe.
Speaking at the European Round Table for Industry in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Prime Minister highlighted the growing alignment between India and European nations in an increasingly uncertain global environment. He stressed that trusted economic partnerships and diversified supply chains are becoming more important as countries seek stable and dependable global collaborations.
Modi said the planned trade agreement between India and the European Union could significantly expand cooperation in key sectors and unlock long-term economic benefits for both sides. He also pointed to large-scale connectivity initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, saying such projects would deepen commercial engagement and provide fresh momentum to India-Europe economic relations.
During his address, the Prime Minister projected India as one of the world’s most attractive destinations for investment and manufacturing. He credited the country’s rapid economic growth, major infrastructure expansion, digital public infrastructure, and ongoing policy reforms for creating a favorable business environment for international companies.
Reaffirming the government’s “Design for India, Make in India and Export from India” strategy, Modi encouraged European businesses to strengthen their presence in the Indian market. He emphasized that India is ready to play a larger role in global manufacturing and supply chain networks.
The Prime Minister also called for deeper collaboration between India and Europe in emerging and strategic sectors. He identified artificial intelligence, semiconductors, electronics, telecom infrastructure, clean energy, healthcare, mobility solutions, and deep-tech manufacturing as important areas for future partnership.
Another major focus of his speech was the importance of resilient and diversified supply chains. Modi said India and Europe should work together to reduce vulnerabilities in global trade systems while building stronger industrial cooperation based on trust and long-term stability.
He also highlighted the importance of talent mobility, educational exchange, and skill development partnerships. According to Modi, India’s young and skilled workforce represents a major advantage for global economic growth and innovation in the coming decades.
The high-level interaction brought together several influential leaders and industry executives. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, senior European business leaders, and representatives from major Indian and European companies attended the event.
The discussions reflected growing momentum in India-Europe relations, particularly in areas linked to technology, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and economic resilience. The proposed trade agreement is expected to play a central role in shaping future cooperation between the two sides.
