Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair has revealed the first look of her upcoming feature film “Amri,” a cinematic tribute to legendary painter Amrita Sher-Gil. The announcement quickly gained widespread attention online, highlighting strong anticipation for a project that brings together an international cast and a deeply artistic narrative rooted in early 20th-century history.
The film features newcomer Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role as Amrita Sher-Gil, supported by a powerful ensemble including Priyanka Chopra, Jaideep Ahlawat, Emily Watson, and Jim Sarbh. The project also includes contributions from several global artists, reflecting its cross-cultural storytelling approach that spans India, Hungary, and France.
According to early details shared about the production, “Amri” is not structured as a conventional biographical film. Instead, it aims to explore the emotional, artistic, and cultural journey of Sher-Gil, who is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential modern painters. The narrative traces her evolution as an artist who bridged European techniques with Indian themes to create a distinct visual identity.
Mira Nair has described the project as deeply personal, noting that Sher-Gil’s artistic vision has influenced her own filmmaking journey for decades. The story of Amrita Sher-Gil follows a remarkable life that began in Budapest in 1913 and moved across continents before settling in India. Born to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother, Sher-Gil was exposed to diverse cultural influences from an early age. She later trained in Paris, where she became one of the youngest students at the École des Beaux-Arts and received recognition for her extraordinary talent.
After returning to India in the 1930s, Sher-Gil produced some of her most iconic works, focusing on rural life, women, and everyday Indian subjects. Her paintings were known for blending European artistic techniques with deeply Indian themes, creating a style that was both modern and culturally rooted.
Despite her artistic brilliance, Sher-Gil’s life was marked by personal challenges, controversies, and a constant search for identity. She died in 1941 at the age of just 28, leaving behind a legacy that would only be fully appreciated after her death.
