Entrepreneur and political figure Vivek Ramaswamy has secured a decisive victory in the Republican primary for the Ohio Governor’s race, emerging as the party’s official candidate for the upcoming November 2026 election. Backed by former US President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy won an overwhelming 87 percent of the vote, defeating his opponent Casey Putsch by a wide margin.
With this victory, Ramaswamy will now face Democratic candidate Amy Acton in the general election. Acton, a physician and former State Health Director, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and is expected to present a competitive challenge in November.
Ramaswamy, a billionaire entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of about $2.5 billion, has had a rapid rise in political prominence. He previously contested the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 but later withdrew from the race and endorsed Donald Trump. Following that, he briefly served in a government efficiency initiative alongside Elon Musk before shifting focus to state-level politics.
His candidacy has gained significant attention, not only for his strong backing within the Republican Party but also for his background as an Indian American leader. If elected, he would become one of the few Indian Americans to serve as a US state governor, joining leaders such as Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley.
Ohio has remained a Republican-leaning state in recent years, with the party maintaining strong electoral performance. This political landscape is expected to provide Ramaswamy with an advantage heading into the general election, although economic concerns and national political trends could influence voter sentiment.
Ramaswamy’s campaign has focused on governance reforms, economic growth, and administrative efficiency, themes that have resonated with Republican voters during the primary.
As the race moves toward November, the contest between Ramaswamy and Acton is expected to draw national attention, reflecting broader political dynamics in the United States.
