Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasised the need for a united message of peace and dialogue from India’s Parliament amid the escalating conflict in West Asia, underlining the country’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Modi said that the prolonged conflict in the region has led to a global energy crisis, impacting trade routes and the supply of essential commodities such as petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilisers.
He highlighted that the situation is particularly concerning for India, given its strong economic and human ties with the region. Around one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making their safety a key priority for the government.
The Prime Minister also pointed to disruptions in maritime activity, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, where several ships with Indian crew members remain stranded due to ongoing hostilities.
“In these critical circumstances, it is essential that a united voice of peace and dialogue emanates from this House to the entire world,” Modi said, calling for consensus across political lines.
He noted that India has been actively engaging with key stakeholders, including countries in the Gulf region, as well as Iran, Israel, and the United States, through continuous diplomatic outreach. The government’s primary objective, he said, is to restore peace through dialogue and de-escalation.
Modi stressed that attacks on civilians, infrastructure, energy facilities, and commercial shipping are unacceptable, and reiterated India’s call for reopening critical trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that India is making every effort through diplomatic channels to ensure the safe return of Indian ships and safeguard its citizens abroad.
Reaffirming India’s stance, the Prime Minister said that in times of conflict, protecting human life remains paramount, and all parties must work towards a peaceful resolution at the earliest.
India’s approach, he concluded, continues to focus on diplomacy, stability, and global cooperation to address one of the most sensitive geopolitical crises.
