India and Sri Lanka have held discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in the agriculture sector, with a key focus on the adoption of cost-effective technologies to improve farm productivity and increase farmers’ incomes. The talks reflect ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen bilateral ties in areas that directly support rural development and food security.
India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, met Sri Lanka’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, K D Lal Kantha, in Colombo on Thursday. During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration in modern agricultural practices, with emphasis on making advanced yet affordable technology accessible to farmers to enhance overall output and income levels.
According to an official statement shared by the Indian High Commission, the discussions highlighted the importance of joint efforts in improving agricultural efficiency. Both parties also reviewed broader regional and global developments, underlining the need for continued cooperation between India and Sri Lanka as important regional partners working toward shared development goals.
The engagement is part of a wider series of ongoing diplomatic and developmental initiatives between the two nations. On Wednesday, High Commissioner Santosh Jha participated in the inauguration of a 240-foot extra-wide Bailey Bridge on the Chilaw-Thoduwawa Road in Sri Lanka. The infrastructure project was built by the Indian Army under a USD 450 million post-disaster assistance package extended by India.
The newly constructed bridge restores a crucial coastal connection along the Colombo-Puttalam route, improving transportation and connectivity for local communities. It is expected to play an important role in reviving economic activity and supporting livelihoods in the region.
Earlier engagements also included discussions between Indian officials and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Science and Technology on expanding cooperation in science, technology, and institutional capacity building. These initiatives reflect India’s continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development across multiple sectors.
The broader India-Sri Lanka partnership has seen consistent engagement at the highest levels, including meetings between Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders have previously emphasized strengthening economic, trade, and cultural ties, while also acknowledging India’s assistance during recent natural disasters.
Together, these developments highlight a growing framework of cooperation between the two neighboring countries, with a shared focus on technology-driven development, infrastructure support, and long-term regional stability.
