Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a series of projects valued at over USD 550 million in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Friday, just ahead of the state assembly elections. Modi conducted the ceremony via video conference from Guwahati after his visit to Kokrajhar was canceled due to heavy rainfall.
Highlighting the improved peace and security in the Northeast, Modi noted that the region has moved past the days of bombs and gunfire. He credited the BJP with ensuring long-term stability, contrasting it with the Congress, which he said pursued agreements for “selfish interests” and jeopardized national security by compromising local land rights.
As part of the developments, the Prime Minister flagged off three new trains: the Kamakhya-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Express, and the Narangi-Agartala Express. He also laid the foundation stone for a Periodic Overhauling Workshop at Bashbari to strengthen railway maintenance and improve operational efficiency.
Modi virtually performed the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ for Assam Mala 3.0, a major road infrastructure initiative that will see the construction of over 900 km of roads to enhance inter-state connectivity and link national highways with rural areas. Additionally, he inaugurated four flyovers and two bridges in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area, developed with an investment of approximately USD 132 million.
Officials noted that these projects are expected to reduce traffic congestion in Kokrajhar district while improving connectivity for tourism, agriculture, healthcare, and rural communities. The infrastructure boost is also aimed at supporting sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
Assam’s assembly elections are scheduled for April, with the ruling BJP seeking a third consecutive term amid heightened focus on development and stability in the state.
