On December 28, US Congressman Shri Thanedar stated that the relationship between India and the United States is experiencing tension, primarily due to tariffs imposed on Indian goods. Speaking during his visit to Karnataka, Thanedar emphasized that these trade measures have not been helpful in improving bilateral relations, according to ANI.
“The relations between India and the US are currently a bit strained because of the tariffs, and these duties aren’t serving either country well,” Thanedar remarked. He underlined the importance of mutual friendship and trust, adding that stronger cooperation and understanding could significantly enhance relations between the two nations.
Thanedar linked the imposition of tariffs to US concerns regarding India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, which Washington has argued indirectly supports Moscow’s military efforts in Ukraine. The tariffs were initially imposed in August 2025 under former President Donald Trump, beginning with a 25 percent levy on Indian exports. The duty was later increased by another 25 percent, taking the total to 50 percent, explicitly due to India’s oil imports from Russia.
During his visit to Karnataka, Thanedar also attended the centenary celebrations of his alma mater, Chintaman Rao Government Primary and High School, reflecting on his educational roots and his connection to the local community. His visit highlighted both the ongoing economic dialogue between India and the US and the personal ties that shape his perspective on bilateral relations.
Congressman Thanedar’s remarks come at a time when trade policies are under scrutiny, with both countries exploring ways to balance strategic interests and economic cooperation. Analysts note that reducing tariff-related tensions and fostering mutual trust could pave the way for more robust trade and diplomatic collaboration in the coming years.
