Young Indian-American Anushka Dhariwal has been selected as the only participant from the United States for the 89th Know India Programme (KIP), a Government of India initiative designed to deepen connections between the Indian diaspora and their ancestral homeland.
The recent Rutgers University graduate met Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh in New York following her selection for the two-week program, scheduled from September 15 to 29, 2026. The initiative offers young members of the global Indian diaspora an opportunity to explore India’s history, cultural traditions, governance, and development journey.
During her visit, Dhariwal is expected to engage with Indian institutions, youth organizations, and fellow participants from different parts of the world. The experience is intended to provide firsthand exposure to India while encouraging meaningful connections among young people of Indian heritage living abroad.
Expressing her appreciation for the opportunity, Dhariwal described the program as a potentially life-changing learning experience. She said she hoped to strengthen her understanding of Indian heritage and culture, gain insights into how the world’s largest democracy functions, and connect with young professionals from across the globe.
A resident of Bergen County, New Jersey, Dhariwal’s participation highlights the role of younger members of the Indian-American community in maintaining cultural and social ties with India. Her selection also creates an opportunity to share her experiences with others in her community after returning to the United States.
The Know India Programme combines educational visits, discussions, and cultural activities to help participants develop a broader understanding of contemporary India. Beyond introducing the country’s traditions and institutions, the program seeks to encourage lasting relationships between India and younger generations of the diaspora.
During his meeting with Dhariwal, Acting Consul General Vishal Harsh extended his best wishes for a valuable and enriching experience.
Organized by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the Know India Programme forms part of the government’s wider efforts to engage overseas Indian youth and familiarize them with the country’s heritage, achievements, and ongoing development.
