Xavier University School of Medicine in Aruba is marking 18 years under the leadership of President Ravi Bhooplapur by emphasizing its growing academic and professional connections with the United States and Canada. The institution has steadily focused on creating structured pathways that enable its graduates to pursue clinical training and medical practice in North America.
Since Bhooplapur took charge, the university has worked to strengthen its global standing through formal recognitions and accreditation milestones. It has secured unconditional accreditation from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine, along with recognition from key US medical education bodies, including those responsible for evaluating foreign medical graduates. These approvals play a crucial role in enabling students to qualify for residency programs and licensing processes in the United States.
Additional recognition from the New York State Education Department has further expanded opportunities for students, allowing them to access clinical training rotations and professional pathways within New York’s medical system. This has significantly improved the institution’s integration into the US healthcare education framework.
The university reports strong academic outcomes, including an 85% residency match rate this year. Students have also achieved more than 85% pass rates on the USMLE Step 1 exam and around 90% on Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, both of which are essential benchmarks for securing residency positions in the United States.
Beyond the US, Xavier University has expanded its engagement with Canada by increasing residency placement opportunities and improving access to provincial financial support programs. These initiatives are aimed at helping Canadian students manage education costs while transitioning smoothly into medical careers within their home country.
In addition to its core medical curriculum, the institution has diversified its academic offerings. It launched a veterinary medicine program in 2023 under a One Health framework and has also introduced nursing programs that have already produced multiple graduating cohorts. A future online Master of Public Health program is planned for launch in 2026.
Infrastructure development is also progressing on the Aruba campus, with investments directed toward new academic buildings, laboratories, student housing, and facilities for veterinary studies. University leadership has credited long-term strategic planning and institutional support for sustaining this growth trajectory.
Overall, Xavier University continues to position itself as a global medical education hub, strengthening its role in preparing students for healthcare systems in North America and beyond.
