The White House has described India as a strong, dynamic, and resilient economy following the release of official figures showing that the country’s gross domestic product expanded by 7.8 percent. The positive assessment highlighted India’s growing importance in the global economy and its potential to create new opportunities for international businesses and investors.
Speaking during the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai said India’s latest economic performance supported the Trump administration’s view that the country continues to emerge as a major global economic force.
According to Desai, India’s large market and rapid economic expansion make it an increasingly attractive destination for American companies looking to expand internationally. He said the country’s economic progress represents an encouraging development for both the US government and the American business community.
The White House official also indicated that the Trump administration is interested in increasing economic engagement between the two countries. The administration, he said, wants to encourage greater investment by American businesses in India while also seeking to attract more Indian investment into the United States.
Strengthening the broader economic relationship between the world’s two major economies remains an important priority, Desai suggested. He also emphasized the importance President Donald Trump places on relations with India and noted Trump’s frequently discussed personal friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Desai expressed optimism about continued discussions between Washington and New Delhi, suggesting that the two governments could hold productive conversations in the coming days as well as over the longer term. Economic relations between India and the United States were also expected to feature in discussions involving US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other international finance leaders attending the G20 meeting.
The G20 discussions in Asheville were expected to focus significantly on strategies for restoring and accelerating global economic growth. Desai said participating countries would examine measures aimed at increasing economic activity, improving wages, and raising living standards internationally.
On the proposed India-US trade agreement, Desai said discussions had progressed beyond broad political understanding and were now focused on detailed technical negotiations. While leaders had established a general understanding, technical teams were working through specific issues, including product classification and tariff-related matters.
Desai said the administration remained optimistic about the negotiations and reiterated that Trump wants a strong partnership with India in both economic and political areas.
With India continuing to expand its role in trade, investment, manufacturing, energy, and emerging technologies, the two countries are expected to remain important partners in discussions surrounding global economic growth, financial stability, and international development.
