The US Embassy in India has welcomed New Delhi’s decision to lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian remotely piloted aircraft systems for the Indian Navy, describing the capability as an important addition to India’s maritime surveillance network. The embassy said the systems would support stronger maritime domain awareness and enable continuous monitoring across the Indian Ocean Region.
The Ministry of Defense announced the agreement on August 17 following the signing of a contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. The arrangement will provide the Indian Navy with two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance remotely piloted aircraft systems for a period of 30 months.
The contract, valued at approximately $232 million based on the reported rupee value, was signed at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi. The agreement adds a new surveillance capability to the Navy at a time when monitoring extensive maritime areas has become increasingly important for regional security.
The MQ-9B systems are equipped with advanced technology, sophisticated sensors and modern mission payloads designed to support Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations. Their long-endurance capabilities will allow the Navy to maintain surveillance over large areas of the maritime domain for extended periods.
With the aircraft deployed for maritime operations, Indian naval forces will be able to observe activity across wider stretches of the sea and maintain a more consistent picture of developments in the region. The additional surveillance capacity is also expected to improve the Navy’s ability to identify, track and assess activities that could have implications for maritime security.
The lease is expected to contribute to India’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence and awareness across the Indian Ocean Region. Persistent surveillance can provide decision-makers and operational forces with timely information, helping them respond more effectively when new developments emerge at sea.
The US endorsement of the agreement also highlights the continuing defense relationship between Washington and New Delhi. The deal reflects cooperation in advanced defense technologies while supporting India’s maritime security requirements.
