Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagement in Washington received favorable attention from sections of Indian social media, according to a recently released US Embassy assessment. The document highlighted positive reactions to his discussions with President Donald Trump, defense cooperation efforts and meetings with prominent figures during his February 2025 visit.
The internal assessment, dated February 18, 2025, examined conversations on X surrounding Modi’s trip to the United States. The US State Department released the document in July under the Freedom of Information Act. It is classified as “unclassified,” while the identities of officials involved in preparing the analysis have been withheld.
According to the assessment, some Indian users considered Modi’s diplomatic efforts particularly effective in areas such as trade discussions and defense agreements. His ability to negotiate with the Trump administration was viewed by supporters as evidence that he was firmly advancing India’s interests in important bilateral discussions.
Modi’s personal rapport with Trump was another prominent positive theme identified in the assessment. Social media users reportedly viewed their relationship as an advantage for India, particularly as the two leaders engaged publicly during the visit. Trump’s description of Modi as a “tough negotiator” was also seen positively by some supporters.
The assessment pointed to Modi’s broader outreach as another factor behind favorable reactions. His meeting with technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, interactions with members of the Indian American community and appearance alongside Trump during an open press event were viewed by supporters as deliberate diplomatic moves. These engagements helped reinforce the perception that India was actively projecting its interests in Washington.
His accommodation at Blair House, the historic US presidential guest residence located near the White House, also attracted attention. Some social media users compared Modi’s stay there with visits by former Indian prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who had previously stayed at the residence.
The assessment additionally noted positive reactions to the US-India COMPACT initiative, which focuses on strengthening military cooperation, technology partnerships and commercial ties. Supporters particularly welcomed plans involving defense technology development and production in India.
Modi met Trump at the White House on February 13, 2025, during his first US visit after Trump returned to the presidency.
