The value of securities held by US investors in India reached $390,000 million at the end of 2025, according to preliminary figures from the US Department of the Treasury. The data keep India among the leading overseas markets for American portfolio investors.
The figures were published on August 31 in the Treasury Department’s preliminary annual report covering US holdings of foreign securities at the end of 2025. The survey was carried out in coordination with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
India ranked 12th among countries and jurisdictions receiving the largest amounts of US portfolio investment, maintaining the same position it held in the previous year.
American holdings in Indian securities increased from $383,000 million at the end of 2024 to $390,000 million in 2025. That represents an increase of approximately 1.8%.
Stocks accounted for the vast majority of the investment. US investors owned about $380,000 million worth of Indian equities at the end of 2025, compared with $373,000 million one year earlier. Their holdings of Indian long-term debt securities rose to $11,000 million from $10,000 million. Investments in Indian short-term debt remained below $500 million.
The Treasury figures represent the market value of securities owned by US investors. They do not cover direct investments in physical assets such as factories, infrastructure projects or other facilities.
India also remained ahead of mainland China in terms of US portfolio holdings. American investors held approximately $318,000 million in Chinese securities, including $300,000 million in equities and $17,000 million in long-term debt. Although US holdings in China increased substantially from $240,000 million in 2024, they were still about $72,000 million below the value of US holdings in India.
South Korea recorded approximately $384,000 million in US portfolio holdings, placing it just behind India. Taiwan had about $668,000 million, while Australia recorded $478,000 million.
The Cayman Islands remained the largest destination, with US portfolio holdings valued at approximately $3,070,000 million. The United Kingdom followed with $2,010,000 million, while Canada recorded $1,890,000 million. Japan accounted for $1,480,000 million and Ireland for $1,180,000 million.
Overall, US investors held approximately $19,300,000 million in foreign securities at the end of 2025, up from $15,800,000 million a year earlier. Foreign equities made up the largest share at $15,250,000 million, while long-term foreign debt stood at $3,610,000 million and short-term debt at $423,000 million.
The overall increase was driven primarily by the rise in overseas equity holdings, which grew from roughly $12,100,000 million in 2024.
