The United States has delivered another MH-60R Seahawk helicopter to the Indian Navy, marking another step forward in the expanding defense partnership between New Delhi and Washington. The aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, arrived in Kochi last week, while two additional helicopters are expected to reach India shortly, according to the US Embassy in India.
The embassy described the latest delivery as a reflection of the increasingly close defense relationship between the two countries. It emphasized that the induction of advanced military platforms continues to strengthen cooperation while supporting India’s efforts to modernize its naval capabilities.
The latest arrival follows a major defense agreement finalized in late 2025, when India approved a sustainment package valued at approximately $946 million for its fleet of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. The package is designed to ensure long-term maintenance and operational readiness while improving interoperability between the Indian and US navies. The initiative also supports broader maritime security objectives across the Indian Ocean region.
India originally acquired the helicopters through the US Foreign Military Sales program in 2020. The Indian Navy formally inducted the multi-role aircraft into service in March 2024 at INS Garuda in Kochi, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing modernization efforts.
Former Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi previously praised the helicopter fleet, describing the MH-60R as a highly capable and reliable platform. He also confirmed that the helicopters were successfully deployed during Operation Sindoor, where they performed their assigned operational roles effectively.
The MH-60R Seahawk is designed to perform a wide range of maritime missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface operations, surveillance, search and rescue, and ship-based deployments. Its advanced onboard systems enable crews to detect underwater threats, monitor maritime activity, and support naval task forces during complex operations.
Equipped with sophisticated radar, dipping sonar, sonobuoys, lightweight torpedoes, Hellfire missiles, and precision targeting systems, the aircraft significantly enhances the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities. The helicopter is widely used by the US Navy and several allied nations, serving as a versatile platform for maritime security, humanitarian missions, medical evacuation, and combat operations.
The continued delivery of MH-60R helicopters highlights the deepening strategic partnership between India and the United States, with both countries expanding collaboration in defense technology, military preparedness, and regional maritime security.
