US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), describing the ambitious infrastructure initiative as a potential alternative for transporting energy and commercial goods across the region.
Trump made the remarks during a multilateral meeting with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. His comments placed the India-backed corridor within a broader US strategy focused on regional security, energy diversification and protecting international trade routes.
Addressing concerns over Iran’s activities, Trump said attacks affecting commercial shipping and neighboring countries demonstrated the need to redirect Middle East energy infrastructure away from routes vulnerable to Iranian checkpoints. His remarks underscored the importance of developing alternative transportation networks to support the uninterrupted movement of energy resources.
The president also referred to discussions involving US special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner with mediators engaged in talks concerning Iran. Trump characterized their meeting as productive, although he did not provide extensive details about the discussions.
The IMEC project was formally announced during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023. India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the European Union, France, Germany and Italy signed a memorandum establishing the framework for cooperation on the initiative.
The proposed corridor is intended to connect India to the Gulf region through maritime routes, before extending toward Europe through a combination of rail and shipping networks. The project seeks to create a more integrated system for moving goods and energy across Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
Its broader objectives include reducing transportation times, improving supply chain efficiency and expanding economic cooperation among participating countries. The corridor is also expected to support stronger energy and infrastructure connections between the three regions.
Trump’s renewed endorsement highlights the strategic importance Washington attaches to alternative trade and energy routes amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. However, the initiative’s progress will depend on infrastructure development, coordination among participating nations and prevailing regional conditions.
IMEC remains a major proposed connectivity project aimed at strengthening commercial links between India, the Gulf and Europe while expanding options for the movement of goods and energy.
