The proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between India and the United States has moved significantly closer to completion, with officials from both countries indicating that only a handful of issues remain unresolved. According to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, negotiations have reached an advanced stage, with nearly all major components already agreed upon and discussions now focused on the final details.
Speaking during the CITI 2026 India Conference in Mumbai, Gor expressed confidence that the agreement would be finalized soon. He described the remaining issues as largely technical in nature, involving legal language, procedural matters, and implementation timelines rather than major policy disagreements. The ambassador emphasized that successful trade negotiations require compromise from both sides and praised the efforts of Indian negotiators throughout the process.
A key area still under discussion involves tariff arrangements. India is reportedly seeking greater clarity regarding future tariff structures and assurances related to market access before formally concluding the agreement. These discussions have gained urgency as the United States prepares for potential changes to existing tariff measures in the coming weeks.
The ambassador stressed that the trade pact is expected to create mutual benefits for both economies by improving commercial opportunities, expanding trade flows, and strengthening economic cooperation. He described the agreement as a positive outcome that would support growth and business interests on both sides.
Earlier this week, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal echoed a similar assessment of the negotiations. He stated that the majority of key issues have already been resolved and expressed confidence that the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement would be concluded in the near future. According to Goyal, the initial pact is expected to lay the foundation for broader discussions aimed at developing a more comprehensive trade partnership between the two countries.
The momentum behind the negotiations has also been supported by ongoing high-level engagement between Indian and American officials. Gor is expected to meet Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi along with a visiting US trade delegation that is currently engaging with Indian ministries on trade and economic matters.
Addressing speculation surrounding the pace of negotiations, the ambassador highlighted the strong relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that their continued engagement has helped accelerate progress toward an agreement.
If finalized, the trade deal could mark a major milestone in India-US economic relations, opening the door for deeper commercial collaboration, improved market access, and stronger long-term strategic ties between the world’s two largest democracies.
