Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has asserted that India, Brazil, and African nations should be granted permanent representation in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This statement, reported by the state-owned TASS news agency, emphasizes the need for these countries to have a voice in the Council to better reflect the global majority.
Lavrov expressed his belief that it is long overdue for countries like India and Brazil, along with African representatives, to hold permanent seats in the Security Council. He stated that doing so is crucial for ensuring that the Council is more representative of global demographics.
India has been actively campaigning for reforms in the UNSC for several years, advocating for an increase in both permanent and non-permanent members. Officials in New Delhi argue that the current structure, established in 1945, does not adequately represent the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. India has made it clear that it is deserving of a permanent seat at the Council’s decision-making table.
Recently, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, expressed their support for India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UNSC.
India last served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2021 to 2022, and there is a growing consensus on the need to expand the number of permanent members to align with current global realities.
