The 2026 Assembly elections delivered some of the most dramatic political surprises in recent years, with several influential leaders suffering unexpected defeats across multiple states. The election outcomes highlighted a major shift in voter sentiment and significantly altered the country’s political landscape.
Among the biggest setbacks was the defeat of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who lost the prestigious Bhabanipur Assembly seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari secured victory by a margin of 15,105 votes, marking a symbolic and political triumph for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state. The result represented another major chapter in the long-running rivalry between the two leaders after their closely watched Nandigram contest in 2021.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin also faced a major electoral blow after losing the Kolathur constituency, a seat he had successfully retained since 2011. Stalin was defeated by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate V. S. Babu by 8,795 votes. The loss was viewed as a significant setback for the DMK and reflected the growing influence of actor-politician Vijay’s party in the state.
In Assam, senior Congress leader and deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, lost the Jorhat Assembly constituency to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by 23,182 votes. The result surprised political observers, especially since Gogoi had won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in 2024 with a strong margin of approximately $1.44 million votes.
Tamil Nadu also witnessed setbacks for several BJP leaders. Union minister L. Murugan lost the Avanashi Assembly contest to TVK candidate Kamali S by 15,373 votes. Former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Tamilsai Soundarajan finished third in the high-profile Mylapore constituency, where TVK candidate Venkataraman P emerged victorious while the DMK secured second place.
In West Bengal, veteran Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury suffered defeat in the Baharampur constituency, losing to BJP candidate Subrata Maitra by 17,548 votes. Another notable leader, Mausam Noor, who had shifted from the Trinamool Congress to Congress, lost the Malatipur seat to TMC candidate Abdur Rahim Boxi by a massive margin of 59,747 votes.
Kerala also produced unexpected outcomes. Senior CPI(M) leader and state minister V. Sivankutty lost the Nemom seat to BJP state president Rajeev Chandrashekhar by 4,978 votes. Former state minister K. K. Shailaja was defeated in Peravoor by Congress leader Sunny Joseph with a margin of 14,453 votes, adding to the list of major political upsets witnessed during the elections.
