Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India, during its G20 presidency, successfully built a consensus on utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly for all. He made this statement while addressing the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris, an event he co-hosted with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Highlighting India’s advancements in AI, PM Modi stated that the country leads in AI adoption and technological solutions for data privacy. He emphasized that India boasts one of the largest AI talent pools in the world.
“India has developed a robust digital public infrastructure catering to over 1.4 billion people at minimal costs. This infrastructure operates on an open and accessible network, supported by regulations that modernize the economy, reform governance, and improve lives,” he said.
Asserting that AI is poised to shape the future of humanity, PM Modi underscored India’s commitment to innovation and responsible AI development.
Discussing the longstanding collaboration between India and France, the Prime Minister noted that both nations have worked together on initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance to harness solar energy. He highlighted that their partnership in AI is a natural extension of their commitment to sustainability and innovation.
“Sustainable AI goes beyond clean energy. AI models must also be optimized for efficiency in size, data consumption, and resource utilization. After all, the human brain is capable of composing poetry and designing spacecraft while consuming less power than a standard light bulb,” he remarked.
PM Modi also announced that India is developing its own large language model, leveraging the country’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape. He emphasized that India follows a unique public-private partnership model to pool computing resources, ensuring that startups and researchers can access AI technology affordably.
“India is prepared to share its expertise to ensure AI serves everyone. While some fear machines surpassing human intelligence, our future remains in human hands. This responsibility must shape our approach to AI,” he concluded.
