Good Friday holds immense religious significance for Christians globally, including in India, where it is observed as part of Holy Week, falling between Palm Sunday and Easter. This solemn occasion is especially marked in regions with large Christian populations, such as Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. Kerala, with its significant Christian demographic, also celebrates Good Friday extensively.
The observance is known by different names in various regions of India. In Malayalam, it is referred to as Duhkhavelli, which translates to “Sad Friday,” while Tamil speakers use terms like Periya Velli, meaning “Big Friday,” or Punita Velli, meaning “Good Friday.”
