Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting Germany and the Netherlands to explore new trade and investment opportunities, strengthen industrial cooperation and advance economic engagement with European partners. The visit comes as India and the European Union continue negotiations on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Accompanied by a delegation of around 100 businesses and startups, Goyal will engage with policymakers, industry leaders and investors to identify opportunities for expanding bilateral commerce and strengthening India’s economic partnerships across Europe.
In Germany, the minister will participate in the Berlin Global Dialogue, bringing together international policymakers and business leaders to discuss economic cooperation and global investment priorities. His engagements will include meetings with Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, an economic and financial policy adviser, and the country’s G7/G20 Sherpa.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening trade and investment corridors between India and Germany, promoting technological collaboration and identifying new opportunities for businesses in both countries. Advanced engineering, green mobility and clean technology are among the key sectors expected to feature in the engagements.
The ongoing India-EU FTA negotiations will also form an important part of the discussions, particularly in relation to market access, investment flows and opportunities for Indian businesses seeking to expand their presence in European markets.
The visit is intended to build on the established economic relationship between India and Germany while encouraging greater industrial collaboration. German expertise in advanced manufacturing and engineering, combined with India’s growing industrial capabilities and expanding consumer market, offers opportunities for partnerships across several sectors.
The delegation will also participate in an India-Germany Investment Roundtable organised with Germany Trade & Invest. The meeting will focus on investment opportunities and the prospects for Indian companies establishing or expanding their operations in Germany.
Following the Germany engagements, Goyal will travel to the Netherlands for a series of government-to-government meetings in The Hague. The programme includes bilateral ministerial discussions with Dutch officials responsible for economic affairs and climate, as well as foreign trade and development cooperation.
These meetings will explore opportunities to expand trade channels, strengthen investment partnerships and promote initiatives supporting the green transition. Cooperation in sustainable technologies and climate-related industries is expected to be an important area of engagement.
The minister’s programme in the Netherlands will also include meetings with the King’s Commissioner of North Holland and members of the Dutch Parliament’s committees on foreign trade and European affairs. These engagements are expected to provide opportunities to discuss economic cooperation and strengthen institutional links between the two countries.
The business delegation will participate in sector-specific roundtables covering automotive, advanced manufacturing, infrastructure and energy. Other discussions will focus on information technology, artificial intelligence, services, agri-food, consumer goods, textiles, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and wellness.
The broad sectoral agenda reflects India’s efforts to diversify export markets, attract foreign investment and encourage partnerships in emerging technologies and high-value manufacturing. Participation by businesses and startups is also expected to help identify commercial opportunities and facilitate direct engagement with European companies and investors.
The India-EU FTA negotiations provide an important backdrop to the visit. A comprehensive agreement could help improve market access, reduce trade barriers and establish a more predictable framework for commerce between India and the European Union, subject to the final terms agreed by both sides.
For Indian exporters, manufacturers and service providers, closer engagement with Germany and the Netherlands could open additional avenues for entering European markets. At the same time, European companies could explore investment opportunities in India’s expanding manufacturing, infrastructure, technology and clean energy sectors.
Goyal’s visit underscores India’s broader effort to strengthen economic ties with European partners through trade negotiations, business-to-business engagement and industrial collaboration. The outcomes of the meetings could help identify new investment opportunities and support the long-term expansion of India-Europe commercial relations.
