Indian-origin American tennis player Nishesh Basavareddy delivered one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 French Open after defeating World No. 9 and seventh seed Taylor Fritz in a gripping four-set encounter on Sunday. Playing his first-ever match at Roland Garros, the 21-year-old, ranked 148 in the world, secured a career-defining victory and his maiden win over a top-10 opponent.
The match, played on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, lasted nearly three hours and ended 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 in favour of Basavareddy. Despite Fritz fighting hard in the third set, the young challenger regained control in the fourth set to close out the contest in dominant fashion.
Fritz entered the tournament with limited match preparation after being sidelined for two months due to a knee injury. The lack of competitive rhythm appeared to affect his performance as he struggled to maintain consistency against the rising American talent.
With this victory, Basavareddy became the first American player since the year 2000 to defeat a top-10 opponent at the French Open. The last such win was achieved by Jan-Michael Gambill, making the result even more historic for the United States tennis contingent.
Basavareddy’s entry into the main draw came after winning the USTA Roland Garros wild card challenge, which earned him a place in the prestigious Grand Slam event. His performance now sets up a potential second-round clash against another young American, Alex Michelsen, depending on results.
Born on May 2, 2005, in California, Basavareddy is the son of Sai Prasanna and Muralikrishna Basavareddy, who migrated from Andhra Pradesh to the United States in 1999. He rose through the junior ranks quickly, reaching World No. 3 in ITF junior standings and winning the 2022 US Open boys’ doubles title.
Coached and mentored by former doubles World No. 1 Rajeev Ram, he further developed his game on the ATP Challenger circuit, securing titles in Puerto Vallarta and Tiburon in 2024. That same year, he also featured in the ATP NextGen Finals in Saudi Arabia.
He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2025 Australian Open, where he faced Novak Djokovic in a challenging opening-round match. Although he showed promise by taking a set, he eventually lost in four sets. Later in 2025, he broke into the ATP top 100 and competed in Wimbledon and the US Open, though both ended in early exits.
After his breakthrough win in Paris, Basavareddy described the victory as the biggest of his career, saying, “What a match. Taylor’s obviously a great player, so super happy to get through that, especially after losing the third set. First French Open main draw, and all the support, it’s incredible.”
