META, the technology company behind Facebook, has unveiled plans to build its first artificial intelligence-enabled data centre in India through a strategic collaboration with Reliance Industries Ltd. The upcoming facility will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, representing a major step in expanding advanced digital infrastructure within one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets.
The project is set to launch with an initial operational capacity of 168 megawatts, underscoring the scale of META’s commitment to strengthening its global artificial intelligence capabilities. Under the partnership framework, Reliance Industries will be responsible for developing, operating and maintaining the infrastructure, while META will lease the facility for its computing requirements. The agreement also includes provisions that could accommodate future expansion as demand for AI-powered services continues to rise.
According to the company, India’s vast digital population, accelerating technological advancements and increasing adoption of artificial intelligence applications have made the country an important destination for long-term investment. By positioning advanced computing resources closer to Indian users and businesses, the initiative is expected to improve efficiency while supporting the nation’s broader digital transformation objectives.
Reliance Industries will oversee the entire lifecycle of the project, providing comprehensive services ranging from planning and construction to utility management and network integration. The company will also incorporate renewable energy solutions and managed services to ensure the facility operates efficiently and sustainably.
The data centre is projected to be completed within the next two years and is expected to address the growing need for high-performance computing infrastructure required for AI workloads, cloud-based operations and a wide range of digital applications. As organizations increasingly adopt data-intensive technologies, investments in such facilities are becoming essential for maintaining competitiveness in the evolving global digital landscape.
Industry analysts suggest that large-scale investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure could significantly enhance India’s technological capabilities. Improved access to advanced computing resources may encourage further domestic and international investment while accelerating innovation across industries including e-commerce, financial technology, digital services and data analytics.
The collaboration between META and Reliance Industries also highlights India’s rising importance as a strategic destination for global technology companies seeking to expand their infrastructure footprint. Beyond strengthening the country’s role in the international AI ecosystem, the project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities, support infrastructure development and contribute to the sustained expansion of India’s digital economy in the years ahead.
