A major political crisis has unfolded in West Bengal after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign despite her party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the state, ending the Trinamool Congress’s long-standing rule, but the outgoing Chief Minister has rejected the mandate and challenged the outcome.
Mamata Banerjee, who has often been known for her combative political style, asserted that she does not accept the election result. Speaking to reporters, she claimed that the victory of the BJP was not legitimate and alleged that the mandate was the result of large-scale “irregularities.” She stated that she would not visit the Raj Bhavan or submit her resignation, insisting that she has not lost the election in principle.
Her remarks come amid heightened political tension in the state, as the BJP prepares to stake its claim to form the next government. According to procedural norms, the winning party is expected to be invited by the Governor to establish a new administration before the current Assembly term ends on May 7. With only a short window remaining, political developments are unfolding rapidly.
Banerjee further alleged that multiple electoral processes across states had been compromised and accused institutions of bias. She also claimed that she and her party were targeted during the election process, adding that there were incidents of physical mistreatment and disruption during polling activities. She said such actions undermine democratic principles and questioned the fairness of the electoral system.
She also announced that her party would form a fact-finding committee comprising Members of Parliament to visit areas where Trinamool Congress offices were reportedly vandalized following the election results. Despite the setback, she maintained that the party has support from allies within the broader INDIA bloc.
Meanwhile, political reactions emerged from national leaders. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also criticized the election process and echoed concerns raised by Banerjee, alleging that democratic institutions were being weakened. He urged opposition parties to set aside internal differences and focus on what he described as larger concerns regarding electoral integrity.
The BJP, on the other hand, is expected to proceed with government formation following its strong electoral performance in West Bengal, where it secured a clear majority. The developments have set the stage for a significant constitutional and political confrontation in the state as transition efforts continue under tight timelines.
