India and Ecuador have taken fresh steps to strengthen their bilateral relationship through high-level discussions focused on expanding cooperation across multiple strategic sectors. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks on Wednesday with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is on her first official visit to India. The discussions centered on deepening collaboration in areas such as trade, agriculture, healthcare, digital transformation, and capacity building initiatives.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared on social media platform X that both sides explored new opportunities to enhance engagement and also agreed to work closely in multilateral platforms. He highlighted that the visit marks an important step in reinforcing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
A key highlight of the discussions was Ecuador’s decision to begin the process of joining India-led international initiatives, including the Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance. This move reflects growing alignment between the two countries on global environmental and conservation priorities. Ecuador is already part of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, further strengthening its participation in global sustainability frameworks.
Both sides also agreed on funding arrangements for Quick Impact Projects, which are aimed at supporting small-scale but high-impact development initiatives. According to Jaishankar, this agreement represents meaningful progress in advancing development cooperation between India and Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian minister arrived in New Delhi for a three-day official visit aimed at broadening bilateral engagement. The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed her arrival, noting that the visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
During her visit, Sommerfeld is scheduled to pay tribute at Rajghat before holding meetings with senior Indian leaders, including the Minister of Commerce and Industry and the Minister of Health and Family Welfare. These engagements are expected to explore new opportunities for collaboration in trade, healthcare systems, and mobility-related issues.
Earlier diplomatic interactions have also laid a strong foundation for this visit. In the past year, India and Ecuador have expanded cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, education, tourism, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. A Memorandum of Understanding between diplomatic training institutions was also signed, along with the inauguration of India’s resident embassy in Quito, signaling deeper engagement.
Diplomatic relations between India and Ecuador, established in 1969, continue to evolve through regular consultations and growing institutional partnerships, reflecting a steady expansion of ties across political, economic, and cultural dimensions.
