India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in New Delhi on Thursday as global leaders gathered for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral partnerships, enhancing regional cooperation, and addressing major international issues affecting member nations and partner countries.
One of the key meetings involved Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, where both leaders reviewed the progress achieved under the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The talks also explored deeper collaboration between India and ASEAN nations. Sharing details of the interaction on X, Jaishankar expressed satisfaction over the growing partnership and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation across regional platforms.
The diplomatic engagements took place alongside the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which is being hosted in Delhi. Jaishankar is leading the ministerial gathering, where representatives from BRICS nations are expected to exchange views on major geopolitical developments, economic priorities, and regional security matters.
A day earlier, Jaishankar also met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for extensive discussions on the long-standing strategic partnership between India and Russia. According to Jaishankar, the meeting covered several important sectors, including trade, investment, energy collaboration, transportation connectivity, science and technology partnerships, and mobility opportunities for skilled professionals. The two leaders additionally discussed broader international and multilateral concerns that hold significance for both countries.
The External Affairs Minister also interacted with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira during the summit. Their conversation reportedly centered on bilateral cooperation and various regional and international developments. India and Brazil have continued to strengthen coordination on global platforms, particularly within BRICS and other multilateral forums.
In another important bilateral engagement, Jaishankar met Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. During the talks, he reiterated India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and reviewed the ongoing cooperation initiatives between India and the Maldives. Jaishankar also reaffirmed India’s support for the Maldives’ growth and development efforts.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS member and partner nations are participating in the Delhi meeting. Delegates attending the summit are also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the diplomatic engagements surrounding the event.
