India’s export sector recorded broad-based growth during the first half of fiscal year 2027, with shipments to Africa and several Asian markets registering notable gains. Figures released by the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) on October 19, 2026, indicate that the country is expanding its international trade presence while reducing its reliance on a limited number of export destinations.
Africa emerged as a significant contributor to this expansion. Indian merchandise exports to the continent climbed 47% to $26.19 billion during April-August FY27, compared with $17.83 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier. Africa’s share of India’s total exports consequently increased from 9.7% to 12.2%.
East Africa delivered particularly strong results, with exports nearly doubling to $8.95 billion, representing a 94% increase. Shipments to the Southern African Customs Union rose 53% to $5.09 billion, while North African markets recorded growth of 33%, reaching $4.03 billion. West Africa also contributed to the upward trend, with exports increasing 7% to $5.57 billion.
India’s commercial engagement with Asian markets also strengthened. Exports to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) advanced 56% to $23.08 billion, while shipments to North-East Asia increased 37% to $21.03 billion over the five-month period. Exports to South Asia and other European countries grew by 24%, highlighting the wider geographical spread of India’s export performance.
West Asia, which experienced trade disruptions amid the US-Iran conflict, showed signs of recovery. Indian exports to the region rose from $4.20 billion in April to $5.01 billion in August, suggesting a gradual improvement in trade flows despite regional challenges.
Several product categories also recorded substantial gains. Exports of light-duty trucks increased 71%, while medium-duty truck shipments rose 67%. Optical fiber and cable exports surged 158% to approximately $483 million. Electrical control board exports nearly doubled, reaching around $303 million.
The broader trend remained positive through September. India’s total merchandise exports for April-September FY27 increased 18.51% to $259.89 billion, compared with $219.30 billion during the same six months of the previous fiscal year.
The figures point to expanding opportunities for Indian businesses across established and emerging markets. Continued diversification, stronger regional trade relationships and growing demand for manufactured goods could help sustain export momentum as FY27 progresses.
