California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Sweena Pannu, an Indian American attorney, to be a judge in the Stanislaus County Superior Court. She worked at M. L. Sarin as an attorney from 1996 to 2004. Attorney Pannu worked as a deputy public defender in the county’s public defender’s office for more than ten years. Since 2020, she has worked for the Stanislaus County Counsel’s Office as a deputy county counsel.
In the recent announcement of 27 Superior Court Judges for the State of California, Pannu was selected by the Governor. She will take over as Stanislaus County judge to fill the gap left by Judge Thomas D. Zeff’s retirement. In the Stanislaus County Counsel’s Office since 2020, Pannu has worked as a Deputy County Counsel. She worked as an attorney at M.L. Sarin from 1996 to 2004 before serving as a deputy public defender at the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s Office from 2006 to 2020.
After earning a law degree from Punjab University and a master’s degree in law from the University of Aberdeen School of Law in Scotland, UK-born attorney Pannu was born in India.
