The Association of Indo Americans (AIA) organized an interactive community session in Milpitas, California, bringing together students and India’s Consul General in San Francisco, Satish Kumar Sivan. The gathering provided middle school, high school and college students with an opportunity to discuss culture, identity, community involvement and opportunities available to young Indian Americans.
The conversation focused on the experiences of young people growing up with connections to both India and the United States. Students explored how they can maintain an appreciation for Indian traditions while also embracing the diverse cultural environment and values of American society.
During the discussion, Consul General Sivan encouraged participants to view their dual cultural background as an opportunity rather than a challenge. He spoke about the value of drawing from the strengths of both cultures while recognizing some of the difficulties young Indian Americans may encounter as they develop their identities.
Sivan also explained how the Consulate General of India in San Francisco can engage with and support younger members of the Indian-American community. The discussion highlighted the importance of creating stronger links between students, community organizations and the Indian diplomatic mission.
Experiential learning was another theme of the session. Sivan encouraged students to broaden their understanding of the world by traveling, visiting different places and engaging directly with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Such experiences, he noted, can help young people develop wider perspectives and make informed choices about their future.
The event also highlighted the importance of sustained interaction among Indian-American youth, community organizations and diplomatic representatives. As a growing generation continues to navigate life between two cultural environments, such conversations can provide opportunities to exchange experiences and build stronger community connections.
The AIA organizing team thanked Consul General Sivan for spending time with local students and participating in an open discussion about their experiences and aspirations.
The organization said it intends to continue developing initiatives that encourage young Indian Americans to stay connected with their heritage while strengthening relationships within the wider community. Through such platforms, AIA aims to provide younger generations with opportunities for dialogue, cultural engagement and community participation.
