Dr. Kedar S. Mate, a physician and prominent healthcare quality expert, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of California, adding extensive experience in healthcare delivery, patient safety, innovation and digital health to the nonprofit organization’s leadership.
Mate currently serves as chief medical officer of Qualified Health AI, a digital health company focused on helping healthcare organizations implement artificial intelligence responsibly. His career has included senior leadership positions in healthcare improvement and quality, including serving as president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
With more than 20 years of experience across the US and international healthcare sectors, Mate has worked at the intersection of clinical care, healthcare policy, technology and system transformation. His professional work has also included advising major institutions such as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
His experience extends to board and advisory positions with organizations including MLK Community Health System, Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Center for Care Innovations. He has also contributed to the National Academy of Medicine’s work on developing an artificial intelligence code of conduct, reflecting his focus on responsible technology adoption in healthcare.
Blue Shield of California Board Chair Pamela DeCoste said Mate’s combination of medical expertise, executive leadership and experience with innovation would be a valuable addition to the organization’s board.
Mate said he was pleased to take on the new role and expressed his intention to contribute to Blue Shield of California’s efforts to expand access to high-quality healthcare while keeping services financially sustainable.
In addition to his new board position, Mate maintains several academic and clinical roles. He is a senior scholar at Stanford University’s Clinical Excellence Research Center and practices internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He is also a faculty member at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Mate earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School after completing his undergraduate studies in American history at Brown University.
Blue Shield of California was established in San Francisco in 1939 and is now headquartered in Oakland. The nonprofit, independent health plan serves nearly 6 million members and employs about 6,800 people. Its offerings include health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare coverage across California.
Mate’s appointment highlights the growing role of healthcare technology, quality improvement and responsible AI in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the United States.
