India and Brunei Darussalam are looking to broaden their economic partnership, with trade officials from both countries identifying new opportunities in agriculture, healthcare, energy and business development during their third Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting on October 15, 2026.
The meeting reviewed existing commercial ties and explored ways to increase bilateral trade, resolve market access challenges and encourage closer cooperation between businesses. Officials also discussed institutional measures to facilitate business-to-business exchanges and expand India’s exports of agricultural and animal products to Brunei, supporting the Southeast Asian nation’s food security needs while diversifying trade between the two countries.
The discussions were co-chaired by Amit Verma, joint secretary in India’s Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Dr. May Fa’ezah Ahmad Ariffin, permanent secretary for economy and trade at Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Representatives from relevant ministries, government departments and organizations from both sides participated in the meeting.
Healthcare and pharmaceuticals emerged as important areas for future collaboration. Both countries considered opportunities for regulatory cooperation, procurement arrangements and healthcare services, with the aim of creating stronger links between their respective industries. Energy was another priority, as officials explored partnerships involving both traditional and emerging energy sectors to support long-term industrial development.
Beyond sector-specific cooperation, the two governments emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections and expanding commercial engagement. Tourism promotion, participation in trade fairs and exhibitions, and reciprocal business delegations were identified as potential ways to bring companies together and uncover investment prospects.
These initiatives could help businesses assess opportunities across manufacturing, infrastructure and services while improving awareness of each country’s commercial strengths. Targeted promotional activities and direct engagement between companies could also encourage new partnerships and support broader economic collaboration.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular communication through designated agencies and working groups. These mechanisms will help track agreed initiatives, coordinate follow-up activities and maintain momentum after the meeting.
The next session of the India-Brunei Darussalam Joint Trade Committee is scheduled to take place in Brunei Darussalam.
The latest discussions reflect both countries’ interest in building a more diversified and resilient economic relationship. By addressing trade barriers, facilitating exports and encouraging cooperation across key industries, India and Brunei aim to create additional opportunities for businesses while strengthening their broader bilateral partnership.
