Continuing the tradition, Maha Kumbh 2025 has drawn over 275 million devotees to the Triveni Sangam for the holy dip since its commencement. On Thursday alone, more than 4.5 million pilgrims visited, including over a million Kalpwasis. Authorities have ramped up efforts to manage the massive crowds and ensure smooth arrangements for visitors.
A tragic turn of events occurred early Wednesday when a stampede-like situation led to multiple casualties and injuries. Following a brief pause, saints resumed their arrival at Triveni Sangam for the second Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya. Despite the unfortunate incident, the grand festival remains a significant attraction, expected to see a total footfall of over 450 million, including international visitors and renowned personalities.
Among the high-profile attendees, Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin and actress Dakota Johnson arrived in Prayagraj on Monday. Dressed in saffron attire, they captured attention as they joined the spiritual gathering. Their visit follows Coldplay’s India tour, which concluded with a concert in Ahmedabad on Republic Day.
The Maha Kumbh, a revered Hindu festival held every 12 years, runs from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj. Pilgrims gather at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the now-extinct Saraswati rivers, believing the holy dip cleanses sins and grants liberation. Key upcoming bathing dates include February 3 (Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
Devotees from across the world have expressed awe at the event’s scale and organization. Visitors from Russia, France, the UK, the US, and Germany praised the festival’s spiritual energy, seamless arrangements, and welcoming atmosphere. Many called it a life-changing experience, deeply moved by the devotion and unity among pilgrims.
Notable celebrities have also taken part in the sacred baths, including Milind Soman, Hema Malini, Sunil Grover, Kabir Khan, and Guru Randhawa.
Meanwhile, a judicial commission has been formed to investigate Wednesday’s stampede, which claimed 30 lives and injured over 60 people. Led by retired Justice Harsh Kumar, the panel aims to determine the causes and propose measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The team has already begun its inquiry and plans to visit Prayagraj soon. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, ensuring medical care for the injured and assistance for their families.
