The Indo-American Association Houston (IAA) will present acclaimed Odissi dancer and choreographer Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya’s The Draupadi Phenomenon on September 20, bringing a contemporary interpretation of one of the Mahabharata’s most powerful female figures to the Houston stage.
The 90-minute production will take place at MATCH in Houston as part of IAA’s programming in the Midtown Houston Cultural Arts and Entertainment District. Bhattacharya has conceived, written, choreographed and performed the title role in the production.
Rather than simply retelling the ancient epic, The Draupadi Phenomenon examines Draupadi’s experiences through a contemporary lens. Born from fire and publicly humiliated in a royal court, Draupadi refuses to remain silent and challenges those who fail to protect her.
The production explores questions that continue to resonate in modern society, including who speaks for women, who has the authority to make decisions for them and what happens when institutions and bystanders remain silent in the face of injustice.
Bhattacharya combines the expressive vocabulary of Odissi with the dynamic and martial movement of Mayurbhanj Chhau. Ensemble choreography, recorded music and multimedia elements create a theatrical presentation designed to connect with audiences regardless of their familiarity with Indian classical dance or the Mahabharata.
The musical score features contributions from internationally recognized artists, including santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya and Grammy Award-winning mohan veena musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The ensemble includes performers trained in Odissi, Chhau and Bharatanatyam, including artists based in Houston.
IAA Houston Executive Director Sheetal Bedi said the production reflects the organization’s goal of presenting ambitious work rooted in Indian traditions while encouraging conversations across cultures.
Bhattacharya’s career spans more than four decades. She has performed internationally and is known for productions that use classical Indian dance to explore contemporary social themes. Through the Sanchita Dance Foundation and teaching initiatives in India, the United States and China, she has also trained and mentored emerging dancers.
Founded in 1993, IAA Houston is a nonprofit presenter dedicated to performing arts from the Indian subcontinent. The organization has been recognized as a Houston Cultural Treasure and promotes cultural exchange, artistic innovation and dialogue across communities.
The Draupadi Phenomenon will be staged September 20 at 4 p.m. at MATCH, Box 4, with tickets priced from $29 to $99.
