Vice President Kamala Harris drew attention at the “Unite for America” event on Thursday night with Oprah Winfrey, as she humorously recounted a hypothetical situation regarding a break-in at her home. She quipped, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” before laughing and noting the potential consequences of her words, saying, “I probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”
Earlier in the week, during ABC’s first presidential debate, Harris defended herself against former President Donald Trump’s comments regarding gun control, stating, “This business about taking everyone’s guns away — Tim Walz and I are both gun owners.” She urged others to stop spreading misinformation, asserting, “We’re not taking anyone’s guns away.”
Harris reiterated her identity as a gun owner, mentioning it again during the event, prompting Winfrey to express surprise at this revelation.
The conversation also addressed the recent mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, where a survivor recounted her traumatic experience of being shot twice. In response, Harris articulated her views on gun control, stating, “For too long, there’s been a false choice: you’re either for the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away.” She clarified her support for the Second Amendment, alongside measures such as assault weapons bans, universal background checks, and red flag laws.
In previous comments, Harris has expressed that her gun ownership is motivated by personal safety, stating in 2019 that she owns a gun “for probably the reason a lot of people do.” She has described herself as a proficient shooter, having practiced shooting numerous times.
