The Google homepage’s Doodle today highlights India’s identity, heritage, history, and diversity through textiles as the nation celebrates its 77th Independence Day.
Before delving into the cultural aspect, the US multinational tech company provides a brief about the significance of August 15, India’s Independence Day. It states: “Today’s Doodle celebrates India’s Independence Day and is illustrated by New Delhi-based guest artist Namrata Kumar. On this day in 1947, a new era dawned as India became independent from British rule.” The statement extends a happy Independence Day wish to India.
Artist Namrata Kumar explains her idea and the inspiration behind the Doodle. She reveals that it represents the various geographical regions of the country in a harmonious manner. According to her, “Throughout the creative process, the overarching goal was to honour and celebrate India’s textiles and their profound connection to the nation’s identity.”
The Doodle showcases textile prints such as Kutch, Kantha embroideries, Benarasi, Pattu, Jamdani, and Kasavu weaves, fine ikat, Naga woven textile, Ajrakh block printing, Kanjeevaram, Bandhani resist dyed, Ilkal handloom, Kamalkari block printing, and Mekhela chador weave, among others.
Google’s Doodles, which temporarily modify the homepage logo, are designed to commemorate significant holidays, festivals, and the lives of renowned figures in the realms of art, culture, science, and other fields.
