Finnish President Alexander Stubb has described India as an influential and increasingly important actor in global affairs, emphasizing the need for continued engagement with New Delhi on major international issues. His remarks came during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the sidelines of the Kultaranta Talks held in Helsinki.
Following the meeting, President Stubb shared a message on X, noting that discussions covered key geopolitical developments, including the situation in the Middle East, tensions in the Persian Gulf, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and preparations for the upcoming G7 summit. He highlighted that India’s perspective remains essential in addressing these global challenges and shaping collective responses.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also posted about the meeting, describing it as a productive exchange of views on the evolving global order. He reiterated that diplomacy remains crucial in navigating a world marked by uncertainty and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Both leaders reaffirmed the strength of India-Finland relations and expressed commitment to deepening their strategic partnership, particularly in areas such as digital innovation and sustainable development. They also emphasized the importance of closer coordination within multilateral platforms on issues of shared global concern.
During the broader Kultaranta Talks, Jaishankar participated in a panel discussion with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State from the United Arab Emirates, focusing on the theme of emerging powers and evolving geopolitical competition. The dialogue explored how global power shifts are reshaping international relations and economic cooperation.
Jaishankar highlighted that ongoing global conflicts are generating widespread consequences that extend beyond their immediate regions, underscoring the need for sustained diplomatic engagement to reduce tensions and promote stability. He also stressed the importance of building resilient and diversified supply chains in order to strengthen global economic security in an increasingly volatile environment.
On energy policy, the minister reiterated that India’s decisions are guided by national interest, with considerations of affordability and availability playing a central role in procurement choices. He further emphasized the strategic importance of India’s relationship with the Gulf region, which is supported by strong cultural connections, energy partnerships, and expanding cooperation in defense and security.
The discussions at Kultaranta reflected a shared recognition of the need for stronger international collaboration as countries navigate complex geopolitical shifts.
