The Foundation of Indian Americans (FIA) New England commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence with a large community celebration in Northborough, Massachusetts, bringing together hundreds of Indian Americans, veterans, elected representatives, and local families.
The event celebrated the shared values of patriotism, civic responsibility, and cultural diversity while highlighting the contributions of the Indian American community to American society. Organizers described the occasion as a meaningful blend of national pride, community service, and cultural unity.
A key highlight of the celebration was the launch of the 250 Fruit-Bearing Trees Initiative, an environmental campaign designed to leave a lasting legacy. Under the initiative, 250 fruit-bearing trees will be planted, with each tree symbolizing one year of America’s 250-year journey as an independent nation. The first tree was planted by 95-year-old World War II U.S. Navy veteran Frank Brown, a respected Northborough businessman and the original owner of Brown’s TV.
The ceremony began with the singing of the U.S. National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Preanshi Charnalia. Emcees Jyoti Singh and Irena King guided the audience through an afternoon of cultural performances, tributes, and community recognition.
Special honors were presented to military veterans for their dedicated service to the nation. Frank Brown was recognized for both his distinguished military service during World War II and his decades of contributions to the local community. Additional tributes were paid to U.S. Navy veteran Max Strickland, who serves as Adjutant of American Legion Post 234 and Senior Vice Commander for District 4, along with veteran Richard B. Nieber.
The celebration reflected the growing engagement of the Indian American community in civic life while reinforcing the enduring values of freedom, service, environmental stewardship, and unity that continue to strengthen the relationship between the United States and its diverse communities.
