New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has selected Etsy Chief Executive Officer Kruti Patel Goyal to serve on a newly established Business Advisory Council that will provide guidance to City Hall on the city’s economic priorities and future growth.
Goyal is among 15 prominent business leaders chosen for the council, which brings together executives from a wide range of industries, including finance, technology, real estate, sports, entertainment, retail, food and health care. The initiative is designed to give New York City’s business community a stronger role in discussions surrounding the city’s economic direction and opportunities for long-term growth.
The advisory group will meet every quarter with Mayor Mamdani and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. Members will offer strategic input on key areas such as infrastructure, workforce development, talent availability and the regulatory conditions required for businesses and industries to grow.
The council has been formed as New York City continues to position itself as a major center for business and innovation. The city reported more than 4.85 million jobs in July 2026, while its unemployment rate stood at 5 percent. New York has also attracted significant venture capital investment, with $21.2 billion raised so far this year.
Goyal brings extensive experience in technology, corporate strategy and marketplace operations to her new civic role. Her professional journey began with a childhood shaped by her family’s small business in upstate New York.
Born in Canada, Goyal moved to the United States with her parents, who operated a small motel in a community where they were the only Indian family. The family lived in an apartment above the business, and Goyal helped with daily operations, including working at the front desk, cleaning rooms and managing laundry.
She has previously credited those early experiences with teaching her the importance of discipline, resilience and making thoughtful financial decisions.
Goyal later pursued higher education at Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. She subsequently completed her MBA at Harvard Business School.
Her professional career has included work in mergers and acquisitions at Morgan Stanley and growth equity at General Atlantic Partners. She also held responsibilities in strategy and business development at Viacom before building a career that eventually led her to become CEO of Etsy.
Her appointment to the New York City Business Advisory Council adds her expertise in technology and commerce to the city’s efforts to strengthen its economic competitiveness.
