More than 4,000 people gathered at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois, as Chinmaya Mission Chicago hosted “Vayuputra in Windy City,” a large-scale spiritual and community celebration honoring the organization’s 75th anniversary. The event brought together devotees, families and community members for a day filled with religious ceremonies, cultural performances and activities for all generations.
The celebration marked the legacy of Chinmaya Mission, a global spiritual organization founded under the inspiration of Swami Chinmayananda to spread the teachings of Vedanta worldwide. The event successfully combined devotion, cultural heritage and community engagement, attracting participants ranging from young children to senior citizens.
A major highlight of the program was the Hanuman Chalisa Havan and Puja, where devotees participated in sacred rituals dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The celebration also featured cultural performances, educational exhibits, children’s activities, local business booths and food trucks, creating an inclusive experience for the entire community.
Pujya Swami Swaroopananda, global head of Chinmaya Mission and chairman of the Central Chinmaya Mission Trust, traveled from India to bless the occasion. During his address, he spoke about the spiritual connection between Hanuman ji and Chicago, referencing the idea of “Chi” as a symbol of life energy or Prana and connecting it with the city’s identity as the Windy City.
Swami Swaroopananda encouraged Hindu families, especially younger generations, to preserve their spiritual traditions by learning at least five selected verses from the Bhagavad Gita, known as the Gita Panchamrit. He also invited devotees to attend the upcoming Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav scheduled in New Delhi, India, in October.
Several other Chinmaya Mission spiritual leaders participated in the celebration, including Swami Sharanananda, Swami Aparajitananda, Dhiren Khatri, Brahmacharini Sahana Chaitanya and Brahmacharini Sandhya Chaitanya. Leaders and members from various community organizations also attended the gathering.
The centerpiece of the event was a powerful Havan ceremony featuring 31 Havan Kunds dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Devotees offered prayers as 21 rounds of the Hanuman Chalisa were recited by teams from five Chinmaya Mission Midwest centers — Badri, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Omkara and Hamsavahini — along with numerous cultural and religious organizations.
Each participating group presented the Hanuman Chalisa in different musical styles and ragas, creating a deeply devotional atmosphere. The performances highlighted the diversity of the community while celebrating shared spiritual traditions.
Children were also an important part of the festivities, taking part in interactive games and creative activities inspired by the Ramayana. Events such as Sita’s Hidden Trail treasure hunt, Lanka Leap obstacle activities, Hanuman’s Challenge course and Ramayana-themed art projects helped young participants connect with cultural stories in an engaging way.
A special Chinmaya Darshan exhibition showcased the life and contributions of Swami Chinmayananda. Through displays and videos, attendees learned about his vision and the global impact of Chinmaya Mission, which now includes more than 300 centers, educational institutions, charitable initiatives and community programs worldwide.
The 75th anniversary celebration reflected Chinmaya Mission’s continued commitment to spiritual learning, cultural preservation and community service across generations.
