Indian model Bhavitha Mandava became one of the most talked-about celebrities at the 2026 Met Gala after arriving in a unique Chanel ensemble that sparked widespread discussion online. While many attendees embraced dramatic couture looks for fashion’s biggest night, Mandava stood out with a minimalist outfit inspired by denim, drawing both curiosity and criticism across social media platforms.
The 26-year-old New York University graduate wore a custom Chanel creation designed by the fashion house’s creative director Matthieu Blazy. Her outfit featured a beige muslin half-zip sweater, a white top, and specially crafted pants printed to resemble jeans. Although the look appeared simple compared to many extravagant Met Gala outfits, it carried deep personal meaning connected to Mandava’s extraordinary rise in the fashion world.
Mandava made history in December 2025 when she became the first Indian model to open a Chanel runway show during the brand’s subway-themed Métiers d’art presentation in New York. Her journey to international recognition began unexpectedly when talent scout Showin Bishop discovered her on a subway platform in Brooklyn. That life-changing moment later inspired the Chanel runway look she wore during the show.
For the Met Gala, Blazy reimagined the same concept in a couture version designed specifically around the event’s “Fashion Is Art” dress code and “Costume Art” theme. According to reports, the outfit took nearly 250 hours to create and symbolized the connection between Mandava’s personal story and her growing success in the global fashion industry.
Speaking about the ensemble, Mandava explained that revisiting the subway-inspired look felt emotional because the original Chanel show marked one of the most important milestones of her career. She described the Met Gala outfit as a more elevated interpretation that still honored the spirit of the original moment that transformed her life.
The appearance generated major buzz online, with many social media users debating Chanel’s understated approach for such a high-profile fashion event. However, supporters praised the storytelling behind the outfit and its deeper emotional significance rather than focusing solely on glamour.
Mandava also reflected on how unexpected her career journey has been. In earlier interviews, she revealed that she never seriously considered modeling despite being approached several times in India. Instead, she initially pursued academics and architecture as a safer career path before her sudden breakthrough in New York.
Today, Mandava has become an influential figure for young South Asian women in fashion and continues to build her presence globally as a Chanel ambassador and rising runway star.
