President Droupadi Murmu said on Tuesday that by 2050, India aims not only to meet its clean energy targets but also to become a global hub aggregating solar demand and fostering innovation, manufacturing, and knowledge exchange.
Addressing the 8th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, the President affirmed that India is on track to emerge as a global solar energy leader.
She highlighted the country’s rapid progress in achieving renewable energy milestones ahead of schedule and urged all member nations to link solar energy initiatives with job creation, women’s leadership, rural livelihoods, and digital inclusion.“Our progress should not only be measured in megawatts but in the number of lives illuminated, the number of families strengthened, and the number of communities transformed,” Murmu said.
The President emphasized that solar energy represents inclusion, empowerment, and sustainable growth — not just power generation. She also urged ecological balance in expanding solar infrastructure, noting that environmental preservation is central to green energy adoption.
Murmu reiterated India’s firm commitment to combating climate change through collective global action and shared technological advancement.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, addressing the assembly, highlighted India’s transformation from a marginal player to the world’s 4th largest renewable energy producer, expanding from 81 GW in 2014 to 257 GW today.
“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, India achieved its target of 50% energy capacity from non-fossil sources five years ahead of schedule,” Joshi said.
He credited transformative initiatives like PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-JANMAN, and the ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’ mission for ensuring energy access and strengthening South-South cooperation.
The ISA, led by India, is a treaty-based intergovernmental organisation promoting solar energy adoption across developing nations, symbolising humanity’s shared aspiration for sustainable and inclusive growth.
