Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a joint phone conversation on Thursday, September 4, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. The dialogue spanned key global and bilateral issues, from trade and technology to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to the Indian government’s readout, the leaders stressed that India and the European Union, as two of the world’s largest democratic powers, share a strong bond anchored in trust, shared values, and a vision for a stable, rules-based global order. The discussions highlighted the importance of the India-EU Strategic Partnership in tackling international challenges and promoting prosperity.
Von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s expectation that India will play a vital role in encouraging Moscow to end its war in Ukraine and pave the way for peace. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s consistent position of supporting peaceful dialogue and the urgent restoration of stability. The three leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments, underscoring their shared commitment to peace.
The talks also focused on the future of India-EU cooperation. The EU leaders confirmed their commitment to holding the next India-EU Summit at the earliest possible date, with the aim of adopting a joint strategic agenda by 2026. Modi extended an invitation for both leaders to visit India for the summit.
Progress on the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations was another central theme. The EU reiterated its determination to finalize the pact by the end of 2025, while both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, technology, sustainability, security, defense, and supply chain resilience.
The conversation also touched upon the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), with leaders acknowledging its potential for boosting connectivity and economic integration.
The call underscored the growing momentum in India-EU ties, building on the College of Commissioners’ visit to New Delhi earlier this year. Both sides expressed optimism that upcoming engagements would strengthen their strategic partnership and create a roadmap for cooperation in the coming decade.
