Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London on Wednesday evening to a spirited reception from the Indian community, marking the start of a historic two-day visit centered on enhancing the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The atmosphere outside his hotel was electric, with members of the Indian diaspora waving posters, chanting slogans like “Modi, Modi,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” and dancing in traditional attire. Earlier in the evening, artists playing dhol drums heightened the excitement as the crowd awaited his arrival.
PM Modi took to social media platform X to express his gratitude, writing, “Touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in the UK. Their affection and passion towards India’s progress is truly heartening.”
Many diaspora members spoke with emotion about the experience of seeing or meeting the Prime Minister. One supporter described shaking hands with Modi as a moment of overwhelming pride and happiness, while another praised his achievements in areas such as digitization and Operation Sindoor, crediting Modi and his Cabinet for India’s recent successes.
Others reflected on his magnetic presence. One attendee said, “He looked like a saint to me—there’s something about his aura,” while another shared, “He brings positivity wherever he goes. People love him for that.” A first-time attendee noted feeling inspired and fulfilled after meeting Modi.
This visit, Modi’s fourth to the UK, comes at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Ahead of departure, Modi posted, “Leaving for the UK, a country with which our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has achieved significant momentum in recent years. I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III.”
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, discussions during the visit will focus on advancing cooperation in trade and economy, defense and security, climate change, education, innovation, healthcare, and broader global concerns. The two leaders are expected to review progress on ongoing initiatives and explore new areas for collaboration.
Modi is also expected to meet King Charles III during his stay. This trip follows several recent high-level engagements between India and the UK, including meetings at the G20 in Brazil and the G7 summit in June 2025.
