Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued his diplomatic journey in Namibia, marking the final stop of his five-nation tour. During a special address to the Namibian Parliament, Modi received a standing ovation, with lawmakers enthusiastically chanting “Modi! Modi!”, reflecting the warmth of the bilateral relationship.
In his speech, PM Modi highlighted the power of India’s Constitution, emphasizing that despite his modest upbringing, he was elected to lead the world’s largest democracy for a third consecutive term. He also pointed to President Droupadi Murmu’s journey from a tribal background to the presidency, attributing it to India’s commitment to democratic and inclusive governance.
As part of the visit, PM Modi was conferred with Namibia’s highest civilian award, a recognition of India’s growing partnership with the African nation. In his remarks, he reflected on India’s humanitarian support to Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many countries restricted aid, India provided vaccines, medicines, and healthcare support. He highlighted the Aarogya Maitri initiative, which supplies hospitals, medical equipment, and training to African nations.
Modi announced India’s readiness to supply Namibia with a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine, a life-saving device developed domestically and deployed in 15 countries, helping over 500,000 cancer patients worldwide. He also invited Namibia to join the Jan Aushadhi program, granting access to affordable, quality medicines.
During his bilateral meeting with Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in defense, maritime security, digital innovation (including the expansion of India’s UPI system), renewable energy, and critical minerals.
In Parliament, PM Modi spoke under the theme “freedom to future,” calling for a new model of collaboration that moves away from exploitation. “Let us build a future not based on dominance but on dialogue, not on exclusion but on equity,” he stated, positioning India as a committed development partner.
Modi’s Namibia visit reinforces India’s growing engagement with Africa, focusing on technology, healthcare, mutual respect, and a shared vision of sustainable growth, echoing India’s long-standing support for African empowerment and self-reliance.
