Tesla Has to Manufacture in India, PM Modi and Elon Will Work It Out Soon: Errol Musk
Errol Musk, father of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has expressed strong confidence that Tesla will eventually set up a manufacturing plant in India. He believes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk will find a way to make it happen in a manner that benefits both India and Tesla.
During his ongoing visit to India, the 79-year-old South African businessman said there has to be a Tesla manufacturing plant in India and described India as one of the most important places in the world.
He emphasized that both leaders have their priorities—PM Modi has to focus on India’s interests, and Elon has to focus on Tesla’s goals. Between the two of them, they will find a solution that benefits both sides.
While clarifying that he was speaking as a private individual and not on behalf of Tesla, which is a public company, Errol Musk expressed certainty about Tesla’s future presence in India.
Errol Musk is visiting India in his capacity as Global Advisor to Servotech Power Systems Ltd, a company working in renewable energy solutions. His visit reflects the increasing global interest in India’s fast-paced progress in green energy and electric vehicles.
India’s EV Ambition
India has set ambitious targets for electric vehicle adoption by 2030:
-
30% in passenger vehicles
-
80% in two- and three-wheelers
-
70% in commercial vehicles
These targets align well with Tesla’s global mission and create strong potential for collaboration.
Modi-Musk Dialogue
Earlier in April, PM Modi and Elon Musk discussed India’s potential in technology and innovation. Musk shared his excitement about visiting India later this year, while PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the United States in tech and innovation.
Mixed Signals from the Government
While anticipation builds around Tesla’s manufacturing entry into India, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy recently stated that Tesla is currently looking to open showrooms, not a production facility.
He also mentioned that companies like Mercedes-Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia have shown more interest in EV manufacturing in India for now.
Still, Errol Musk’s comments hint at a possible shift in the narrative, and with high-level talks in motion, India may soon see a more significant Tesla presence.
